Founder's Letter

In 1986 I began research on the treatment of infants with abnormal head shape. With a background in biomechanics, anatomy, and the design of medical devices, I was interested in exploring non-surgical alternatives for pediatric patients. When research demonstrated that abnormal head shapes could be corrected without surgery, I gave up my work in the field of orthotics and founded Cranial Technologies, Inc.

One of our early obstacles was that, in the absence of other choices, many surgeons had attempted to correct abnormal head shapes surgically. We launched an educational campaign to inform physicians that the DOC Band® was a viable alternative. Over the past sixteen years I have presented studies at national and international meetings of craniofacial surgeons and pediatric neurosurgeons, and Cranial Technologies now has compiled the largest database in the world on positional plagiocephaly.

Insurance coverage for treatment of plagiocephaly with cranial remodeling was not available at the start. Only after showing solid clinical evidence of DOC Band treatment, has coverage been provided for the majority of patients.

To maintain quality, all DOC Bands are manufactured in Arizona and clinicians must successfully complete a training program before providing treatment.

The FDA gave its clearance to the DOC Band by creating a new device category known as the 'cranial orthosis' used for treatment of positional plagiocephaly. Being the first FDA approved cranial orthosis marked a significant milestone for Cranial Technologies.
