When parents notice a flat spot or have concerns about their baby's head shape, they often have one question:

"Should I be worried?"

That's exactly why Cranial Technologies was honored to be featured on 12News Arizona Midday — to help educate families about infant head shape development, the importance of early evaluation, and the treatment options available when needed.

Every Baby Deserves an Evaluation, Not Every Baby Needs Treatment

One of the biggest misconceptions about cranial orthotic treatment is that every baby who visits a specialist receives a helmet. In reality, every baby who visits Cranial Technologies receives a comprehensive clinical evaluation first.

Our experienced clinicians perform a thorough assessment that includes head shape analysis, growth evaluation, developmental considerations, and objective 3D Digital Surface Imaging® (DSi®). Based on those findings, families receive personalized recommendations that may include monitoring, repositioning strategies, physical therapy, or DOC Band® treatment, depending on what is clinically appropriate for their baby.

Our goal has always been simple: provide families with the information they need to make confident, informed decisions.

At Cranial Technologies, we believe families deserve more than a device — they deserve education, support, and compassionate care throughout their journey.

From the initial no-cost consultation through treatment completion, our clinical and medical billing office teams partner closely with families, pediatricians, and specialists to provide personalized care every step of the way.

We're also proud to have recently expanded our services to include EarWell® infant ear molding at participating clinics, allowing us to help even more families with specialized care for both head shape and ear shape concerns.

Why Early Evaluation Matters

A baby's head grows most rapidly during the first year of life, making early evaluation especially important when concerns arise. An assessment doesn't automatically mean treatment — it provides parents with answers on what is plagiocephaly?, reassurance, and guidance tailored to their baby's individual needs.

Whether treatment is recommended or not, families leave with a better understanding of their baby's head shape and the confidence that comes from an expert evaluation.

Why Age Is a Critical Factor

During the first six months, a baby's head grows rapidly as the brain develops. As growth slows, there is less opportunity for natural correction — making early evaluation especially important.

Age at StartAverage Treatment Time
Under 4 months5–7 weeks
4 months6–9 weeks
5 months8–10 weeks
6 months2.5–3.5 months
Over 7 months3.5–4 months

Will Flat Spots Go Away on Their Own?

Mild flat spots may improve with repositioning during the first few months of life. However, moderate-to-severe plagiocephaly is much less likely to fully correct without treatment.

No Effect on Brain Development

Plagiocephaly affects the shape of the skull and is not known to cause lasting neurological or cognitive concerns. An evaluation can help determine the most appropriate course of care.
